#3 Night Huntress
Copyright: 2008
Publisher: Avon
Genre: Mystery
Pages: 352
Challenges: Series Challenge
Author's Website
My rating: 4.5/5
Simple Description:
Cat and Bones are still doing the same work, working for the US government trying to rid the world of the vampires who kill innocent people and cause harm. Of course, Bones is a vampire, but he's one of the good guys. Kinda. In this 3rd novel in the series, Cat is a target. She is known as the Red Reaper and while several want to kill her, it's Patra who wont' seem to stop till the Red Reaper is dead. Bones and his grand-sire team up and join lines and together they try to fight Patra.
Now what you really want to know....my thoughts:
This is another one where my description doesn't really due the book justice. The thing is, this is the 3rd in a series. If you read the series then you know who the main characters are and what they do for a living. If you don't read the series and want to, it's best to start with book one. I love this series so far. It's a lot of fun and this is another one where you can't help but like the main characters. I can't wait to see what happens in book #4.
This book is part of my collection and was either bought or given to me.

Plum Spooky by Janet Evanovich
#18 Stephanie Plum (one of the "between" novels)
Genre: mystery
Pages: audio
Challenges: Stephanie Plum Challenge, audio book challenge
Author's Website
My rating: 4/5
Simple Description:
This is another of the "between" novels that features Diesel. Stephanie and Diesel partner up to find Munch, an incredibly smart guy who recently stole some kind of machine from the company he was working at. Stephanie isn't sure exactly what this machine does, but it must be something special since he stole it. Diesel is searching for Wolf, a guy he's been hunting for awhile and who is currently helping Munch.
Things are crazier than usual because the search takes them to a part of Jersey that has the easter bunny, big foot, and a lot of monkeys. Speaking of monkeys, Stephanie is also watching Carl. Carl is a monkey we were introduced to in one of the other novels. Carl likes to give everyone the finger. He also rescue's Stephanie a couple of times.
Now what you really want to know....my thoughts:
I actually really enjoyed this one. In the past I thought the between novels were ok, but not as good as the regular novels. This one was a ton of fun though. I loved how Carl was part of this one, what a fun character (even if he is a monkey). I can't help but love the relationship between Stephanie and all the macho guys, really, I just can't help it.
I definitely think the audio versions are what has me loving this series again. I'm so glad that I decided to give this series another chance. I'm not sure if I'll ever go back to physically reading this series, audio's are the way to go for me.

I don't know if I should give the LA Times a thumbs up for publishing an article on this or a thumbs down because it took them so long to publish an article on this.

The Oxford Murders - the movie
I would have never pictured this book as a movie, but it appears we'll be seeing it in theaters soon. I have to admit that the trailer does look pretty good.
Here's a link to my review (back in 2007).

The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner: an Eclipse Novella by Stephanie Meyer
***Don't forget that you can read this novella online for FREE until July 5th***
Publisher: Little, Brown books for young readers
Genre: YA
Pages: 192
Challenges: young adult
Author's Website
My rating: 3.5/5
Simple Description:
This novella is about Bree Tanner after she is made into a vampire. She is one of the vampires who is made so that a small army of vampires can attack the Cullins. Bree is the one who didn't want to fight and surrenders. I couldn't remember who she was, so I wanted to say that first so you know who she is. I don't think it ruins the story at all..because really most people remembered who she was.
I'm not sure how much I really want to tell you about here. It's such a short book that I don't want to give a review and then...well..what would be the point of reading the book right?
So basically it's about how Bree realizes that what she has been told in the 3 months since becoming a vampire isn't true. Along with another new vampire, they try to figure out why they have been lied to and what the purpose for this small army really is.
Now what you really want to know....my thoughts:
I liked this novella a lot more than I thought I would. I especially loved the end of it. I think I enjoyed it so much because we already knew what was happening..because it happens in Eclipse, only this time we get it from Bree and not the Cullins. If you are a Twilight fan, then I highly recommend this book. I think you'll find it fun and enjoyable. I read it in about 3 hours, so it's a quick read (maybe you can even sneak read it online at work..but don't tell your boss I suggested that).
Thanks to my friend Gloria for letting me borrow her copy of this book.

A Virgin River Christmas by Robyn Carr
# 4 Virgin River series
Copyright: 2008
Publisher: Mira
Genre: fiction
Pages: 320
Author's Website
My rating: 3/5
Simple Description:
Marcie lost her husband Bobbie a year ago. He was in the marines and was injured while serving. Ian Buchanian saved Bobbie, but Bobbie was paralyzed and never regained consciousness. Bobbie survived another 3 years in the company of his wife and family and friends before passing away. Now Marcie is determined to find Ian and reconnect with him. Ian and Bobbie were best friends. Soon after tragedy struck Bobby, Ian quit the marines and disappeared into the woods around Virgin River. Nobody has seen him in 4 years.
Marci does find Ian. He wants her to go home but she's sick and he takes care of her. The longer she stays with him, the more they both realize they need each other in order to heal.
Now what you really want to know....my thoughts:
It's rare for me to read a Christmas book when it's not December, however I'm buddying reading this series with two good friends and there was no way we could wait till December to continue this series. I am glad that while this takes place around the holidays, and it did have a Christmas spirit to it, it wasn't enough to bother me that I read it in June.
While I did like this one, I didn't like it as much as the other books I've read in the series. I'm not sure if this is because the two main characters were both new to the readers whereas in the other books in the series (that I've read so far) each of the main characters had already been introduced in other books, so we were familiar with them already. Either way, this has still been one of my favorite series this year and I'll be continuing with it and recommending it to others.
This book is part of my collection and was either bought or given to me.

New blog design
It was that time again. I was getting antsy with the style and look of the blog so I changed it (again).
I hope you all like it!
I decided to go back to a 2 column blog and clean up my sidebars. Instead of posting my challenges on the sidebar I created a page for the challenges. (Ok..page is created but I don't have the challenges on it yet.)
Also please note that if you wish to leave a comment on any of my posts ( I promise to love you if you do!), the comment option is now in the top right of the post instead of the bottom if you are looking at my home page of the blog. If you link directly to my post or click on the post title and that's the only post you see, it's still at the bottom. I hope that made sense.
I'm made some minor changes as I've been able to figure it out. If you happen to notice anything NOT working, please bring it to my attention. I have this fear that something isn't working or won't be working and I'll have no clue. haha!
Thanks!

City of Bones by Cassandra Clare
#1 Mortal Instruments series
Copyright: 2007
Publisher: Simon & Schuster
Genre: young adult
Pages: audio
Challenges: 101 fantasy, young adult, audio
Author's Website
My rating: 2.75/5
Simple Description:
Clary Fray's life changes forever when she goes to a night club called Pandemonium one night. While there she witnesses a murder. As if this wasn't bad enough, she soon realizes that nobody else can see the parties involved. Within 24 hours her world is torn apart. Her Mom is kidnapped, she realizes that vampires and demons do exist. Oh, and demons are after her. It appears her mom was a shadow hunter, a person who hunted down demons and other nasties in order to protect weak humans. Something that happened that made her Mom run away from all that though. Clary wasn't brought up in that world, although she has it in her blood.
Clary is determined to find and save her Mom. With the help of Jace, Isabel, and Alec, three other teenagers, she embarks on an adventure of a lifetime. She has run ins with vampires, worlocks, and werewolves. She learns more about herself and her Mom, things she would have never guessed.
Don't think everything will be answered in this book though. This is the first of 4, so while it does wrap up a bit in the end, the story is still left open in order to entice readers to continue the series.
Now what you really want to know....my thoughts:
I enjoyed the book but not as much as I had hoped I would. However, I'm not so sure that wasn't because I listened to it via audio. I thought the story itself was interesting, there was enough going on that it would probably be a page turner (if I had read the book version).
I really do think part of my issue with the book is the audio part of it though. There were times when the tone of voice and the infliction ( I think that's the right word) just wasn't right for me. The narrator would say a sentence or two and I would think "I wouldn't read the line like that". I also wonder if part of this is why I could Clary annoying at times, because she seemed to whine a lot. At times it was hard for me to get past how it was being read and just enjoy the story for what it was.
I did read the last 15-20 pages and I enjoyed that a lot more than listening to it. So I think I would have enjoyed this one a lot more if I had read it. I'm definitely going to plan on reading the 2nd in the series to see if I enjoy it. I do have my hopes up that I will. This is one that I do think others will enjoy and like, but I caution you to stay away from the audio version.

Split Second by David Baldacci
#1 in the King and Maxwell series
Genre: Mystery
Pages: 404
Challenges: Thriller and Suspense
Author's Website
My rating: 4.5/5 stars
Simple Description:
King is a lawyer in a small town. He likes his life, his 2nd life. He was a secret service agent but the politician he was guarding was killed on his watch, that ended his career, his first life. Things once again change for him when he finds a dead body in his law office. To make matters interesting, the dead body belonged to one of his employees who just happens to be part of the witness protection program. Soon he has government agencies all over his town and his life. It soon appears that somebody is out to get him though, because his gun is the murder weapon.
Maxwell is a secret service agent. The politician she was guarding was kidnapped on her watch and her career is about to go down the drain. Her gun and badge are taken away from her while the matter is being investigated. She becomes interested in King and when she reviews footage of what ended his career, she thinks something is fishy and the whole story wasn't told. She decides to talk to King, in person.
In the meantime, another person who was with the secrete service but is now on her own, contacts King and asks him to help hr find the kidnapped Politician. She's being paid to find him and offers King part of the loot when the guy is found.
Soon all three of them are involved in tracking down the kidnappers and well as the murders. They think it's the same person (or persons) doing all of it. Their lives are endangered too.
Now what you really want to know....my thoughts:
This is the first book I have read by this author. While I know a lot of people like his work and recommend it to me, I just never really wanted to read his novels. A couple of friends and I finally decided to buddy read one and selected this one. I'm so glad I finally read this! I absolutely loved this book! It was fast paced, it kept my interest, and it kept me guessing. There were several things going on in this book and it was fun to see how they might tie in with each other. I loved how we get info from the bad guys perspective, yet we never know who the bad guys are because their names are never used. It was fun to keep guessing and find out who they were right along with King and Maxwell. I have to admit, I didn't' figure out how it was till I was told.
I hear that this isn't one of the author's better works, so I'm really excited to read more by him since I loved this one so much.

What I'm reading now
I took the following from the author's website:
King and Maxwell meet in Split Second, both discredited Secret Service agents who "lost" a protectee in the line of duty. The two work to solve the campaign-trail crimes that discredited them, and in the process uncover the careful planning that initiated the separate acts of violence that shattered their lives and brought them together in a common cause. Michelle has become obsessed with Sean’s case. And he needs a friend -- especially since a series of macabre killings have brought him under suspicion and prompted the reappearance of a seductive woman he’s tried hard to forget.

Simple Description:
Duck, North Carolina is a small town. Sure there are a lot of tourists during the summer months, even even then the crime rate is pretty darn low. However the residents get a wake-up call when one of the elderly woman who call the town home is missing, and then found dead.
Dae ODonnell is the major of Duck. She also happens to find the dead body, something she hopes never happens again. Dae has a special gift, she can find things. If you are thinking of something you lost, when she touches your hand she can see where it's at so you can find it. This is the first time she ever found a dead body though.
The murdered woman's sister, Mildred, is the prime suspect and is taken into custody. Dae knows Mildred didn't do it and she sets out to prove this. She has the help of a new town resident, Kevin, who used to work for the FBI.
Now what you really want to know....my thoughts:
I think this is a good start to the series. I can't say I absolutely loved the book, but I did like it. I did like the characters that I believe the authors want you to like, and some annoyed me, but again I think the authors wanted that. There's definitely a bit of mystery to Kevin, stuff that happened when he was an FBI agent that I'm sure will come up in future stories. Ok, let me back track for a minute, I do have to admit that while I liked Dae..something about her did annoy me a bit, but I can't put my finger on what exactly it was.
I do recommend this one to cozy mystery fans. It was an enjoyable first novel and there is growth for the characters and the town, I'm sure I'll be reading the next in the series when it comes out.
Thanks to Megan with Berkley Prime Crime for providing this book in hopes I would review it.

Simple Description:
This adventure takes Abby and Dutch to Vegas. Dutch gets a call that his cousin, a man he grew up with and considers a brother, has been kidnapped. Chase was working security and was in charge of protecting a very rich man in Vegas. Both have gone missing. Dutch asks Abby to fly to Vegas with him and use her 6th sense to help locate Chase. Things go from bad to worse when Dutch's rental car is found - and it's totaled. A strange girl is found holding his cell phone but when she wakes up she has amnesia. Dutch is missing. Then Dutch's FBI boss comes in town to help find Dutch but Abby knows he is trying to steer people in the opposite direction. Dutch was investigating his boss for murder after all. With the help of her sister, Cat, and her friend, Candace, Abby tries to find Dutch before he dies. This is not as easy as it might seem, since the FBI is after Abby.
Now what you really want to know....my thoughts:
Absolutely loved this one! I think this is my favorite Abby Cooper story so far, and that's saying something since this is one of my favorite series. Candace is a character full of surprises. The story itself is full of surprises and goofy. Vegas was the perfect location for this one, so many off the wall fun stuff happened that would have been out of place anywhere but in Vegas.
I would give this one a 4.5 out of 5 stars.

I thought this was a wonderful YA book. It touches on several subjects regarding Indian life. It also touches on one kid being very un-popular and not standing out, to slowly making friends and getting people to believe in him and like him for who he is. One thing to note is that Arnold likes to draw comics about things going on in his life. The fun thing with this book is that there are some illustrations, they are the comics that Arnold draws. I feel this enhances the book and fits in well with the story.
I definitely recommend this one to those who enjoy young adult books. I give this one 4 out of 5 stars.
This book is part of my collection and was either bought or given to me.

Nobody on the reservation goes to college, they spend their time getting drunk. They don't have the means or the money to go to college, even if they wanted to.
Then things change. It'st he first day of school and Arnold is excited because he gets to start math class and he likes math. When he opens up his new math book he finds his Mom's name on the inside. The book is so old, his Mom used it in school. He gets frustrated and throws the book, hitting the teacher in the head. Later when the teacher comes to Arnold's house to talk to him about it, he tells Arnold that he is smart and suggests he go to a school off the reservation.
Arnold decides to do this even though he knows it means the other Indians will treat him even worse than they already do. He has some problems becoming adjusted to life at the white school. There are several deaths that Arnold deals with as well.

Simple Description:
This book is about 4 women and how they get through the good and not-so-good things that life throws their way. The book starts out with us getting insight into each woman, each has just learned something that changes their life forever. This ranges from divorce, new love, illness, and a mystery. Then the book skips ahead 3 years in the future. Each woman is now in a new chapter of their life. Don't think it's all great and wonderful though, each woman has problems she is now facing and must deal with. The good thing is that they have found each other and are able to get some support, laughter, and help when it's needed.
Now what you really want to know....my thoughts:
I thought this was a wonderful book. I really like each of the 4 woman, even though they each have their faults. I liked that while two of them were dealing with divorce at the beginning, they are each doing something different 3 years later. I just loved how the woman got together at least once a month and shared the things going on in their lives and how sometimes they bickered over how one of them was reacting to something. That made it seem more real to me.
Overall, this was a great book and I highly recommend it. On a star rating, I give it 4 out of 5 stars.
Thanks to the author for providing this book for review (especially since I couldn't find it at any of the local stores).

Blogger issues
I've been having some issues with Blogger since this weekend. I would publish comments, then try to leave a comment of my own and it would tell me blogger was unavailable (or something like that). Now I can't even see the comments that I approved. grrr
So if you left a comment but don't see it now, I apologize. I'm not sure what is going on.
I do have a couple of reviews to write up too. I'm going to attempt to do that today and hope it all goes through ok.

Friday Smile - It's finally Pool weather!
It's been warmer than usual for this time of year, we've already hit the 90's a couple of times! I'm not complaining though. While it does mean my runs suck, it also means I get to hang out in the pool. I love the pool. I like to float around and read and nap on the weekends, knowing I have that to look forward to helps me survive my co-worker during the week.
Of course, since it was warmer than usual, that means we have already been able to have a pool party. We opened the pool a couple of weeks ago and put the solar cover on it (we even used duct tape to try and hold it together since there are some long rips in it. lol) and the water was nice and warm for this past weekend, perfect temp to get the nephews in the pool.
Before everyone arrived, I got in the pool for my relaxing read and Myla decided to join me. She doesn't like water, so she never gets in the pool (well..unless I force her in and then she doesn't speak to me for a couple days), but she does sometimes lay down by the pool. She was so close...her butt was hanging over. I though for sure she would move and fall in.
Just look at that grin! This little guy loves the pool - he doesn't fear the water at all.
See..what did I tell you? not afraid of the water at all. (although I do believe he kicked his soon to be little brother a couple of times. lol)
After awhile we convinced his older brother to jump in and they both had fun (that's me catching the older brother - closest to the stairs)
Now this guy, he knows how to relax in a pool. This is one cool dude, and he knows it.
I thought this one was hilarious. Myla and nephew looking outside to see what's going on.
This guy wouldn't let me take his picture, but I still managed to get a couple good ones.
I have to lighten this photo, but forgot before posting it. Oops. After he would jump in the pool and I would catch him, he would go up the stairs, climb on the raft and sit for a minute to relax, then get up and do it all over again.

What am I reading now?
I took the following from the author's website:
Every woman has that group of friends in her life ~ her "go to girls" The friends that she can turn to who "get it." The ones who are there for you no matter what. The ones who laugh with you and cry with you. The ones that will always be there. These are the women of Napa Valley.
Jamie is the editor-in-chief of Wine Lover's Magazine, a single mother and caretaker to her senile mother-in-law ~ a woman who thinks her daily caregiver is Dean Martin. Jamie is still recovering, financially and emotionally from the death of her husband several years earlier. And when she finds what could be the key to happiness, can she open the door and let it in? Or will her feelings of guilt and betrayal hold her back?
Danielle is a vintner and the divorced mom of two. She's basking in what she knows is going to be a successful launch of her new wines. Wines she created on her own after her divorce. But what she doesn't expect is for her daughter to come home with news that will shock her to her core. Will an old flame help her accept the changes that are coming and find the love she's been missing in her life for so long? Or will a tragedy that no one sees coming change their lives forever?
Kat is a sommelier, co-owner of a magnificent restaurant with her chef husband, and mother of a blended family. But is being deeply in love with your husband enough to get them through the teenage years, step-children and exes? And what happens when old faces return and she's faced with the knowledge that not everything is what you thought it was. What happens when she finds she was mad at the wrong person and finds out the "right one" was in the wrong? Can she forgive and move on? Can love overcome everything and truly bring a family together?
Alyssa is an artist and gallery owner with a secret of her own. One she was hoping would stay buried deep in her closet. But the time has come for her to put someone else first, to face the past and to deal with her demons. What she never expected to find was love and her "home."
No matter what is going on in their own lives, no matter the heartache or joy they're experiencing these four women are always there to love, support and encourage each other.
This book is a clear example of the power of friendship and how it can last through the years. You will laugh with them and you will cry with them. It's the story of true and lasting friendships. It's the type of friendships that every woman should experience and a story we can hopefully all relate to. I LOVED LOVED LOVED LOVED LOVED it. Can’t say that enough. It is an amazing, beautiful book and I can’t wait to share it with my friends!!! A MUST READ!

Simple Description:
When Mary Alsworthy learns that her new brother-in-law, the man she was supposed to elope with, is going to help finance her last season, she decides to take Lord Vaughn up on his offer. He offered her money in exchange for her help to flush out the Black Tulip. While Mary would love to actually "catch" Lord Vaughn, he does have a lot of money after all, Lord Vaughn does not want to be married again. He had all he could take from his first wife. However, it appears that while neither one of them wants to admit it, they are falling in love with each other.
Lord Vaughn only takes Mary to one meeting before she is contacted by the Black Tulip. When she meets him, he claims that he doesn't know if he should trust her to work for him. He sets up another meeting with her, where he will give her instructions on how to prove her loyalty to him and France. When Mary finally learns what she has to do, it's the last thing in the world she does want to do.
So the saga continues....will we find out who the Black Tulip is in this novel? Will we learn more about the British spy ring?
Now what you really want to know....my thoughts:
I just adore this series. The books are so much fun. I love how, so far, each book revolves around two people we met in previous books and how (of course) they don't really like each other but end up falling in love. We get more answers in this one, we do find out who the Black Tulip is, but there is still some mystery surrounding the Black Tulip at the end.
This is definitely a series that you have to read in order (at least I think it is). It's a great series though, one of my favorites.

Simple Description:
Melanie, Angie, and Tate have been friends since the 6th grade. They didn't think anything would come between us, then Tate got engaged to a royal, um..well...not a nice person. Melanie and Angie have tried to like his fiancée but she's just too much. Then Tate and his fiancée decide to have Melanie provide all the cupcakes for the 500 guests invited to the wedding. Melanie is cool with this, she does own Fairy Tale Cupcakes, but she doesn't like how the fiancée wants 5 new flavors and copyright to those flavors.
When Melanie shows up at the fiancee's clothes shop to go over the cupcakes, she finds her dead and with a cupcake in hand. This makes Melanie a prime suspect.
Melanie knows she didn't do it, Tate is a suspect and she knows he didn't do it. However the fiance's rich parents are pressing the police to take action and a rival baker in the area appears to be helping the community label Melanie as a cupcake murderer. Of course Melanie has only one option, see if she can figure out who really murdered the evil fiancée.
Now what you really want to know....my thoughts:
Wow - what a fun cozy mystery! I just adored this one, one of my favorites so far this year, hands down. I loved all the main/re-occurring characters. I can't help being drawn to this story because it's about a cupcake bakery either. I love to bake and I love cupcakes (honestly..who doesn't?). I also liked how Melanie was looking into the murder, but wasn't always running around. I mean, she did, but not like you see in a lot of other mysteries/cozies. A lot of the story was about Melanie and the relationships with her friends, family, and a future love interest.
Obviously, I highly recommend this book. This is an excellent start to a new cozy series, I know I can't wait for the 2nd to be published.
