History Lesson for Girls by Aurelie Sheehan

The year is 1975 and Alison Glass is a 13 yr old girl whose parents have moved to Connecticut. She is dealing with scoliosis and has to wear a brace. All the kids make fun of her except for Kate. Kate sticks up for her and they soon become friends.

This is a story about these two girls and what happens to them during the course of 1 school year. Kate's parents are rich but also do drugs and her father has, on occasion, beaten her. Alison's family is a bit bohemian - fits with the era though.

Kate soon starts doing more drugs and drinking and hanging out with the wrong crowd. Alison does to a point - but not as much. But then..things get worse in both their lives.

This is one of those books where I was interesting in it from the beginning, even though at first I didn't think anything much was going on. I wanted to know what was going to happen with the two girls - especially once I learned about Kate's home life.
