Open Season by Archer Mayor

Joe is a Detective in Brattleboro, Vermont. He is called to the scene of a crime, an old lady blew off a man’s head with a shotgun. She claims she had been getting threatening calls and was told the man would be at her house that evening. The man she killed had his dog stolen and was told to show up at that address at 2am and to walk in, don’t knock. It appears somebody set them up. Then….more people are terrorized by a man they refer to as ski mask, and Joe realizes they were all jury members in the Kimberly Harris case a couple of years ago. Joe starts to, quietly, look into that case again. At first the case seems too neat, the police had no problems convicting the man who killed Harris. Only when Joe starts to dig into the case he realizes that the police didn’t check everything they could have, and when he does, he starts to realize that the man in jail might not be the man who killed her. While Joe opens up the Harris case, the ski mask man continues to follow in his footsteps terrorizing everyone involved. Joe must find Harris’ real killer before ski mask does.

This is the first book in the Joe Gunther series. I really enjoyed it. I thought Joe was a great character and I can’t wait to read more about him.
