Eragon by Christopher Paolini

Oh man - what a great book! I actually finished it on Friday night but am just now sitting down to write the review.
This is the first in a fantasy young adult series. The third comes out in September, I think. I could be wrong about the month. Anyway.....

Eragon lives with his Uncle and cousin. They are farmers who live in a small town and don't have much money. He is hunting in the woods near the house when a stone falls from the sky. The stone is beautiful and not something he has seen before. Plus, there is a mystery as to how it arrived.

When he gets back home, he tries to trade the stone for meat and food, but nobody seems to want it. He keeps it in his room until one day soon, the stone, which was really an egg, hatches. He has heard all the stories about riders and dragons, but there haven't been any for a long time. Until now that is. Because what hatched out of the egg is a dragon.

This begins the story of how Eragon and Saphira face many dangers in pursuit of the "things" that end up killing his Uncle. Eragon learns how to be a rider and how to use magic. Things get even more complicated when he rescues an Elf and needs to get her to a safe place before the army catches him.

This was such a good read. I bet there are a ton of kids out there who love this series. I can't wait till my nephews (I put the "s" on the end because even though I currently only have one that lives in St. Louis - both of my sisters are pregnant and expecting boys) are old enough to read this series. I enjoyed the different characters in this book and I enjoyed the story and the idea of riders and dragons. I can't wait to read the next one to see what happens to Eragon and Saphira. I assume the Elves will train him...but you never know.

I am glad you enjoyed Eragon, Kris! I read this quite a while ago and so your review was a nice refresher. I have put off reading Eldest because I didn't want to wait so long before reading the third book in what was originally going to be a trilogy, but which now will be at least four books.

I liked Eragon when I first read it. It wasn't until I read that Christopher Paolini was 15 when he wrote it that I was completely wowed and my estimation of author and book went up measurably. I am now looking forward to Bsringr(?). I am already on the waiting list at my library.
