Booking Through Thursday - Best

What, in your opinion, is the best book that you haven't liked? Mind you, I don't mean your most-hated book–oh, no. I mean the most accomplished, skilled, well-written, impressive book that you just simply didn't like.

Like, for movies–I can acknowledge that Citizen Kane is a tour de force and is all sorts of wonderful, cinematically speaking, but . . . I just don't like it. I find it impressive and quite an accomplishment, but it's not my cup of tea.

So . . . what book (or books) is your Citizen Kane?

I would have to say Great Expectations by Charles Dickens. I really don't think I'm a classics type of reader. I saw the movie when it came out, what was that 1998? I really liked the movie so I decided to try the book. I almost gave up on it several times, however, I did finally finish it. It just wasn't the type of book for me. I think the writing was good, I thought the story line was good. I just didn't like it.

I didn't care for that one either, but I forgot to include it. I have three other titles for my answer. Come check it out. Happy BTT.

I guess that would have to be The Historian. Everyone seemed to like it so I bought it and couldn't get no more than 150 pages in because I was being bored to tears.... I think that is the only Dicken's book I've ever read!

Great Expectations is not my favorite Dickens as well. If you'll ever want to give classics or Dickens a try, Nicholas Nickleby or Oliver Twist would be a good place to start.

I haven't read The Historian yet but have had great things, although my sister did try to read it and had the same result, she got bored too.

Yes, I know what you mean. Enjoyed the movie, couldn't read the book.
Same thing happened with Emma, P & P and other classicals. I enjoy the movie version but just can't stand reading them.

If Great Expectations had been half as long, I would have finished it. I'm glad they don't pay writers by the word anymore.

I'm so glad I'm not alone with this one! haha! I have talked to others who enjoyed this book, and I was like...what am I missing? haha!

I'm not a classics reader either. I tried A Tale of Two Cities once and I couldn't make it past the 1st chapter.
