Simple Description:
Bette works for USB bank in NewYork City. She doesn't like her job, doesn't like her boss. The only good thing is that her best friend, Penelope, works with her. Then one day she's had enough and she quits. She doesn't tell anybody at first and sits at home for about a month before anybody finds out. When her Uncle Will finds out, he gets her a job working for Kelly & Company, a PR company. Soon Bette has to learn who all the famous people are in New York and other places, and how to plan the best parties. Her job is to plan by day and party by night. One night when she has a bit too much to drink she ends up connecting with Philip Weston. She wakes up in his apartment the next day, but luckily he informs her that nothing happened.

Soon her name is all over the tabloids and connecting her to Philip, the most sought after Bachelor in New York. The only problem, Bette doesn't like him. She puts on a good face and pretends they are dating so that it helps her career.

Then Bette meets Sammy, and Bette likes Sammy, but Sammy thinks she's dating Philip. Plus, things are rough between Bette and her best friend. Bette doesn't really like her career choice, but doesn't really know how to get out or what she would even do instead.

Now what you really want to know....my thoughts:
What a fun book! I loved this one. I haven't read a chick lit book in awhile and this was perfect for me right now. I actually started out listening to this one, and, well, let's just say a butt load of audio books became available for me at the same time (over 10 actually) and so I decided I would listen to this one in the car and then read it at the same time. Either this book was good enough to keep me up till all hours of the night or I had insomnia. Needless to say, I ended up actually reading most of it (and haven't been sleeping much).

You can guess the ending, it's not hard. But you can't help to want Bette to take the actions she does. You want Bette and Sammy to hook up. You want the bad guys to get in trouble.

Overall, I definitely recommend this book. It's a fun, light read. I actually have owned this one for years and put it off because I read people were disappointed with it after The Devil Wears Prada. I wasn't disappointed though. In fact, I've now read all books by this author and enjoyed all of them. The author has a new book coming out in May, I'm sure I'll end up with a copy.

Simple Description:
Charlotte McNally is a tv reporter and she's worried about being cut. She might be good at her job, she might have won several Emmy's, but she is in her mid 40's and older women seem to be let go in order to make room for younger women.

It's November and she needs a big story in order to make the ratings for the sweeps. She is looking for her next big story when it happens to fall in her lap. She has to step in for the news anchor that doesn't show up and reads a story about a man who was killed in a car crash earlier in the morning. Something about his employer's name seems familiar. Later when she is back at her desk she finds that the company is rumored to be in trouble soon due to a whistle blower and she thinks the dead man was the whistle blower. She delves deeper into the story with her producer Franklin. They might not get the story they starting out looking for, but they do uncover a killer of a story.

Now what you really want to know....my thoughts:
I'm not usually a big fan of mysteries where the main chracter is a reporter (tv or newspaper). Usually the characters are so self-centered and it's all me me me me me. However, I did accept a copy of this book to review because it sounded good and I had heard positive things. Let me just say that it didn't bother me in the slightest that the main character was a reporter. I actually really liked her. There was just something about her personality.

This book was great, an awesome start to a new series by the author. It kept moving for me, I wanted to know what was going to happen and how it would all end up. I didn't figure it out at first, who the main bad person was, although I did have my suspicions.

I can tell you that I'll definitely be reading the rest of the series (currently there are already 4 published..or at least three..can't remember if the 4th was published this month or will be published soon). I think a lot of my blog readers will enjoy this mystery series and recommend reading it. Heck, it would qualify for the cozy mystery challenge that I'll be hosting again starting in April. hint hint

Buy a book and read it - The Cougar Club

I'm participating in the Buy one book and read it 2010 Challenge and I thought the best way to keep track of the books I buy and plan to read this year is to post them on my blog. Lucky you readers get a sneak peek at what's to come (eventually) and why I bought the book.

Last night I went to the kick-off, book launch, signing for The Cougar Club by Susan McBride. The author is based in STL I always try to go to a book signing for her newest release. I like to drag my Mom to them too. Although, I guess I'm not dragging her, she does enjoy going.

If you haven't read any books by Susan McBride, I recommend checking out her website for a list of books or just do a search on my blog. I've read all her books (well..I still haven't read the last in the mystery series but that's because I didn't want it to end and was saving it..I plan to read it this year though). She has written a cozy mystery series, which is what I first fell in love with. Then that line was cut by Avon and she came out with a YA series, which I also enjoyed. This book, The Cougar Club, is the first woman's fiction book.

Here's a bit about the book, which I copied from the author's website:

If you think that life—and romance—end at forty…think again!

Meet three women who aren’t about to run and hide, just because the world says they should be on the shelf and out of circulation:

Kat Maguire: her life seems perfect until she loses her high-powered advertising job and catches her live-in lover in a compromising position—with his computer!

Carla Moss: this sexy TV news anchor is in danger of being replaced by a twenty-something blond bimbo. Wasn’t it just yesterday that she was the up and coming star?

Elise Randolph: a married dermatologist, Elise thinks her plastic surgeon husband is playing doctor with someone else.

Kat firmly believes that aging gracefully isn’t about giving up; it’s about living life with your engine on overdrive. So this unofficial “Cougar Club” quickly learns three things about survival of the fittest in today’s youth-obsessed society: true friendship never dies, the only way to live is real, and you’re never too old to follow your heart.

Simple Description:
Townsend Heights, NY seems like the perfect little town, a throw back to times when you could leave your doors unlocked and walk down the street to the town square for dinner and shopping. This quickly changes with the disappearance of Jane Kendall, part of the wealthiest family in Townsend Heights. Not soon after Jane dissappears, another Mom in the town is found killed. This has several of the other Mom's and Dad's freaked out about their safety. As we get more involved with each of the different families and characters we find that most of them have secrets. Could one of their secret's be that they are a killer?

Now what you really want to know....my thoughts:
This story is told from the view points of several characters. Sometimes this can last several pages, sometimes shorter than that. The author doesn't start a new chapter when she switches characters either. This isn't something I normally like and I admit that it took me awhile to be comfortable with it in this book. But..it totally works for this one. It moves the story right along. It's good to get the view from so many different characters, I think it's part of what makes this such a good book. You have the homely older sister to wonderful Jane, the sister who secretly loves Jane's husband. You have Tisha, mother to three, who is stressed and having trouble coping with her husband being gone all the time due to work. You have Fletch, a man's man and could he be a cheating lady's man as well? There are more characters too, those are just a sampling.

I've only read one other book by this author, it was a YA book and I wasn't too thrilled with it. This is the first adult book/mystery that I've read by he author and I loved it! It kept me guessing till the very end. I read this as a buddy read with several others and I know at least one person figured out who did it early on, but I didn't. I knew who I wanted it to be, thought it would be a good twist in the story, but that's not who it ended up being.

I'll definitely read more adult mysteries by this author and I think several of my readers would like this author too.

Dust and Shadow: an account of the Ripper Killings by Lyndsay Faye

This is my first DNF of the year (hopefully it's not a sign of things to come!)

Here's a link to the author's website.

Honestly, I didn't get very far in the book. I actually put it aside weeks ago with the intent to read one or two books and then pick it back up. However, each time I see it on my bedside table I cringe a bit. I really don't want to pick it up again. That was all the sign I needed to say "Life it too short to read books that just don't keep my interest, time to let this one go."

Here's the thing, I've read the official Sherlock Holmes books, not all, but several. I used to watch the television series with my Dad. I started reading this one and was totally turned off of Holmes. He comes across as such an ass. (pardon my language). Really though, he does. I want nothing to do with him. I have no idea if this is how the author wrote the character of this is really how the character is. I don't remember feeling that way about him when I read the books before. I would re-read one of my favorites, The Hound of Baskervilles, but I'm not going to. Why? Because I'm afraid he really will be an arse! lol! I would rather think he wasn't and remember the story is being great, than to re-read it and find out that these days I don't care for him.

The idea of this story really peaked my interest and I grabbed at the chance when it was offered to me for review. The idea is that Holmes is investigating the Ripper killings. Ok...I'm fascinated by the Ripper killings and I used to love Sherlock Holmes, combine the two and it's got to be awesome right? Wrong..at least for me.

There are several very positive reviews on Amazon, so if the book sounds interesting to you, I suggest checking out those reviews and any others you find.

Thanks to Stepfordmomfor2 for posting her link in a comment. She enjoyed the book! So, click HERE to read her review.

Thanks to (somebody...forgot who sent this to me and can't find the email) for providing this book for review.

Friday Smile - Gently Giants

I love big dogs, but I hold a special place in my heart for Saint Bernards. I thought this week I would show you why. These are photo's of myself and two of the Saints that my family had when I was young. We went for a long time with no dogs, then when I was in highschool we got another one, she was half St. Bernard and half newfoundland, I'll save her photo's for another Friday. I've since had a St. Bernard and I now have a Greater Swiss Mountain Dog, you've seen Myla's photo's before but I'm sure she'll be shown again on a Friday. haha! I've tried to convince my husband that Saints are the way to go or a mastiff or a newfoundland. So far I haven't had any luck. He thinks Myla is big enough and doesn't want bigger. She's 100lbs, which is small to me but massive to everyone else.

My Mom always got mad at me for putting my face close to dogs, but I can't help it. I love to be near them and kissing on them. Thankfully all the dogs I've had have always been incredibly sweet and would never harm me. And..things never change. I'm constantly in Myla's face. She gets back at me by licking me, not so much fun.

The added bonus of these photo's you ask? You get to see me as a wee little thing with blond hair!

Meet Baroness. As you can see, she was fun to sit on. That's me, when I was 2 years old. Wasn't I cute?

Meet Kelsey. She is only 2 months old in this picture. Cute little me is 4 years old.

Kelsey is a bit older in this one, I know it was taken in 82 but not sure what month, she's not even 1 yr old yet. I'm demonstrating how best to teach your dog to be, um, gentle with kids? Yeah..sure..um..that's what I was doing.

This is Kelsey, myself and one of my sisters. Evidentaly I thought Kelsey was being a good girl by pinning my sister to the floor. Plus, check out my shoes. I had excellent taste in shoes even when I was 4! I had a pair of sneakers that looked almost just like that (same color too!) about 5 years ago.

This is Kelsey at 8 months old, I'm still 4. My isn't she big?

This is the last one, promise. I love this picture. I'm using Kelsey as a pillow and she seems perfectly content to let me do that. After seeing these photo's, can you blaim me for holding a special place in my heart for St. Bernards?

Simple Description:
Ali isn't sure what she wants to do in life, well, kinda. Her mom is The Lioness, the best female fighter in her country. Her Dad is a spy. Ali wants to be a spy, a field agent, but her parents forbid it. If she can't be a spy, what else can she do? When her Mother comes home for a rest and makes Ali her project, Ali decides to take an unexpected trip to a city close by. She leaves a note for her parents and leaves early in the morning before anybody is awake to stop her.

Unfortunatly things don't go as planned. Ali is captured by pirates to be sold as a slave. Luckily she made herself seem like a "fighter" and when nobody wants her she is given to a family for free. Luck is with her because this is a very nice family who treats her well. They are royalty and forced into exile by the current king.

Ali has plans to escape but before she can the Trickster god comes to her with a deal. If she agrees to stay with this family through the summer and keep their daughters safe, the god
will deliver her safely to her home and make sure her parents let her become a spy. Ali takes the deal.

Now what you really want to know....my thoughts:
I thought this was a great young adult book. One thing I love is that Ali is such a strong female character. Not to bash the Twilight books (heck..I did love them) but Bella is so weak. I've read several blogs where that's a concern or a complaint rather. But Ali, she is so freaking strong! She's a great role model for young girls, in my opinion anyway. Ali is super smart and courageous.

The story itself kept my interest. I wanted to know what was going to happen to each of the characters and how the book was going to end.

This is definitely a book I recommend to others who like young adult and a bit of the paranormal. Well, do I call it paranormal? I suppose. Maybe Urban fantasy would be a better genre to put it in. Ali has some "gifts" that are passed down from parents to their children. One of the characters, Nowat, is a crow who becomes a Man so he can help Ali in her attempt to keep the royal family safe.

I did listen to this book. I thought the reader did a very good job. I admit to be confused at times but think that I probably would have been even if I read it, there were a lot of people mentioned in this book. Also, my mind kept drifting while I was driving. I don't think this had anything to do with the book though, rather just with things going on in my life right now.

This book is part of my collection and was either bought or given to me. (I did read the very end of the book last night at home. I knew I was close to the end and couldn't possible wait till the next day to finish the story. haha!)

This audio book was rented from my local library.

Reliquiae Challenge - Completed

Man oh man..I got the last book finished just in the nick of time.

The Reliquiae Challenge challenged participants to read books with a paranormal aspect to them, each book had to be different (witches or vampires, etc). I chose to read 3 books for the challenge. The challenge ended today, January 15th 2010.

I read:
A Touch of Dead by Charlaine Harris (vampires)
The Witch's Grave by Shirley Damsgaard (witches)
Blood Bound by Patricia Briggs (shapeshifters)

Click HERE to read my original post about the challenge and reviews for the three books.

Simple Description:
Mercy Thompson is asked to repay a favor to Stefan. Stefan just happens to be a vampire. There is something evil hunting in the Tri-cities and Stefan has found it and wants to approach it. He believes it is another vampire, who is also a sorcerer, and might have power over Stefan. If Mercy goes in her coyote form, the other vampire probably won't be able to control her.

This vampire does get away from Stefan and Mercy, and Stefan is sent to hunt it. Two of the local werewolves also join in. Things get worse when Stefan and one of the werewolfes disappears and when the other werewolve is found beaten and left for dead.

Mercy knows she's the only one who can find the sorcerer and put and end to the killings and increase in violence.

Now what you really want to know....my thoughts:
This is the 2nd book in the series. I really enjoyed it. I love Mercy's character, I think she is a very strong female. The story held my interest the entire time and whenever I had to put it down I couldn't wait to pick it up again. I haven't felt this drawn to a book in awhile.

I know these types of books aren't for everyone, but I personally find them a lot of fun. One of the things I like about this book over some others is that the vampires and werewolves and other creatures aren't made to be all cuddly and nice. Sure, they don't go around killing people, but there is a sense of fear that goes with them. You know that at any moment they could lose control and harm somebody. I like that because it's what I think we all expect these creatures to be like.

This is definitely a series I recommend to those who like a bit of paranormal are drawn to these types of stories.

Friday Smile - What makes Kris tick?

In this latest edition of Friday Smile, I thought I would share a little of what makes me tick, what makes me happy and content. organization. yup, I said it. I love to be organized. When something isn't organized, it bothers me. I admit that not everything is organized in my house, I've been rather busy since Fall and things have gotten a bit messy. My scrap room is also very disorganized but that's mostly due to not knowing exactly how I want to organize it and knowing I'll have to move it in the near future.

However, I still think it's save to say that I love organization. I've been known to re-organize a closet for fun on the weekend. Sick right?

So today you get to see my closet, but just my side. You'll also notice another thing that makes me tick, shoes. I love shoes. I wear high-heals to work most days, and only wear the same pair of shoes once during the week. (I do the same with work pants. haha!).

So here's an overall view of the closet, you can see my shoes because they are straight in front. Does it look organized to you? Maybe, maybe not. How about this: for the most part, each shelf is dedicated to a specific shoe color (with some exceptions). The top shelf holds my silver strappy heels and a pair of nice flip-flops. The next shelf holds brown heels. The shelf below that holds brown shoes that aren't high-heels. Below that are the black shoes. Next up are the green shoes (You didn't realize a girl needed 3 pairs of green shoes did you?). Next up I have a a shelf dedicated to red and pink shoes. Following that one ae the blues. I have a pair of navy blue heels and then my only two pair of diesels. I loved diesels, then they got bought out and and I don't like the styles as much. One pair is light blue with off-white stitching and such, the other pair is mostly off-white with blue and red flower patterns. Below that are mix-matched shoes that don't have another color mate. On the floor are my running shoes (Nike of course). I don't have to label each box. I know which shelf is for which color and I know by looking at the box what shoe is inside.

Here's an over-all look at at my side of the closet (although Husband's pants are also hanging up on my side).

Here's a close-up of some of the shelves. The tubs at the bottom of the picture hold my socks. (side note..we don't have any dressers in our bedroom - we like having little furniture in there so it doesn't clutter the room). One tub holds white socks that are short in length, the other tub holds the white socks that are higher in length, the last one holds black and brown socks. Above that are my running/exercise pants. I have long pants on the left and shorts on the right. Note: I have two other shelves devoted to running clothes. You can see them a bit on the right. The top one holds winter running clothes (long shirts and jacket when not in use) and the shelf below that holds the tank tops. Ok, back to the middle. The next shelf up holds jeans and corduroys. The shelf above that holds my shorts and capri's. You can barely see the top shelf. The tub on the top shelf holds swimming suites and the box (haven't bought another tub yet) holds hosiery and slips that I don't wear often.

This shows how I organize my shirts. I do like to switch out my close for winter/summer. I do keep some of each out all year round, but not much. I keep one shelf for the clothes I can't wear to work and two for those that I can. I also organize each grouping by color. lol! Seriously, you have no idea how much faster it is to get ready in the morning by doing this.

So that's a little peak into what makes me tick. I hope you enjoyed it! If you did, let me know and I'll do some more "Friday Smiles - What makes Kris tick" in the future.

Bones to Ashes by Kathy Reichs

Copyright: 2007
Publisher: Scribner
Genre: Mystery
Pages: audio
Challenges: Audio book challenge

Simple Description:
The book starts of with Temperance Brennan remember part of her childhood. She used to spend summers at the ocean and had a friend there, Evangeline. Evangeline was from Canada. The two girls became instant best friends and looked forward to spending their summers together. Then one year Evangeline disappeared and Temperance couldn't get any answers.
Now..fast forward about 30 years.

Temperance Brennan is back in Canada. Ryan is working on solving the disappearance of several young girls. He things they are all connected somehow. Ippo brings Temperance the bones of what ends up being a young girl. Temperance thinks they are possibly those of her friend Evangeline.

This starts an investigation into finding Evangeline's family and solving the mystery of her disappearance so many years ago.

Ryan also needs Temperances help in solving the mystery of the disappearing girls. In fact, it seems like her two cases might be connected.

Things go from bad to worse when it turns out the disappearing girls might have been involved in pornography, possibly against their will.

Now what you really want to know....my thoughts:
I thought it was ok. I'm a bit disappointed in it. I love this series, although for some reason I'm behind in it. You all know how that goes, right? I don't know if it's just been awhile since I read the series and have grown apart from it, or if maybe it was just this book. Or possibly..I just didn't like listening to it. The story was pretty good, I was just confused and annoyed with the beginning and the childhood memories...it's not clear at first how important it is. I also had pretty much figured out a lot of it about half-way through and got annoyed that Ryan and Temperance didn't. lol!

Was the story good enough to continue reading the series? Yeah, it was. I think in all series there is usually a book or two that readers don't like as much, and I'm hoping that's just the case here. I like the books enough to continue reading them. I won't, however, listen to another audio version. I think the reader did well, I just didn't really like it in the audio format. I'm hoping maybe that's also why I didn't care for the book as much as I have the others.

The Witche's Grave by Shirley Damsgaard

Simple Description:
Ophelia has been having dreams, rather good dreams if I may say. She's been dreaming about a man that she has a connection with. When she is at a function at a local winery and meets the mans he's been dreaming about, it feels like a true connection and they have known each other for ages. He feels the connection too. They take a walk and when they stop, Stephen is shot.

Bill, the local sheriff, thinks that Ophelia was the target. Ophelia dismisses this until she is shot at while in her backyard. Abby and Ophelia send Tink to stay with their relatives while they try and figure out what is going on.

Ophelia thinks this is all due to the latest book that Stephen is writing, and she decides to take a trip to St. Louis (my town...woohoo!) to talk to his assistant. When she does find the assistant, she is in the hospital because she's been mugged.

To make the matters more interesting, Ophelia keeps having dreams where she is a French model living in Paris during WWII. She "lives" this ladies life and learns how she tried to help those who were hunted by the Jews. Abby thinks this is Ophelia in a pas life, but Ophelia doesn't really think so. Ophelia believes it has ties to what is going on in present day, but not sure how it comes together.

Now what you really want to know....my thoughts:
What can I say, this is one of my favorite cozy series. I love the paranormal aspect to it (did I mention that Ophelia and Abby are modern witches? Don't worry..no spell casting..more just being in-tune with nature and energy). I love Ophelia because she's so uncertain with her life and things going on, yet still trying to make the most of it. I think she grew in this one and I cant' wait to see how she grows in the next one.

I definitely recommend this book/series to others. This is the 6th, and of course I recommend starting with #1.

A Touch of Dead by Charlaine Harris

Copyright: 2009
Publisher: Ace
Genre: Mystery
Pages: 208
Challenges: Reliquiae Challenge

Simple Description:
This is actually a compilation of all the short stories that the author had written with Sookie as the main charactor, so far anyway. I believe there is another short story being published later this year so of course that wasn't included. I believe there were 4 stories in all.

I am glad I read the introduction, the author tells you when they stories were originally published - as in what is the timeline between these stories and the actual books.

Now what you really want to know....my thoughts:
I thought the stories were fun. They were fast reads, they were short and to the point. I think it would have been more fun to read the stories between the other books, as they were written, but it was still fun to read them.

If you haven't read the short stories yet and are a fan, I recommend this book.

I know I know, not the best review but with this type of book, you can't really get into the stories. They are so short and cute/fun, I figured an over-all review would be good enough.

This book is part of my collection and was either bought or given to me.

Friday Smile and stuff

First I just want to say that I'm way behind in my blogging right now. I admit to doing a lot of my blogging from work and while my boss and I thought this week would be slow because most people were taking off, I was actually very busy. I pretty much worked from the time I got there to the time I left, it was awesome! I love being busy. I suppose I could have done things in the evenings at home, but I bought a Wii and my husband gave me games for Christmas and I bought my husband Nintendo DS - needless to say I've been playing video games and watching tv in the evenings. haha! Now we are both suffering from a cold, so I'm not going to do much more than the two reviews I just posted (I back dated them) and this post.

I did get some book related items for Christmas. Those are always fun. I had put a couple of t-shirts on my wish list for the in-laws and then my husband surprised me with one.

I got these:
Ban Ignorance not Books
(website isn't displaying it...but that's what it says - I love it)

Book Chick
(website not playing nice with this one either..but it's black and says book chick in pink letters and has a cute pink bird on it)

and my husband surprised me with this one, gotta love the guy!
Team Jacob - real men don't sparkle (and yes..I did wear it when I went to see New Moon this past weekend)

oh, and I got this t-shirt, it's not about books but I love it.
I run like a girl, just try to keep up

I also want to share some pictures from Christmas. These are pictures of my sisters, their husbands and kids. I'm also including one of my Grandpa with a great-grandson and my Mom with two grandsons. It wouldn't be complete without a picture of Myla being festive.
