The Chocolate War by Robert Cormier

This is a book about being in highschool and going against the norm. Trinity is a private school and there is a secret organization made up of students - it is called The Vigils.

The Vigils pick different kids and give them assignments. The kids must obey and so far nobody has ever stood up to the Vigils. Until now. The Vigils give Jerry Renault an assignment - he is not supposed to sell chocolates for the school for 10 days. After the 10 days he is supposed to start selling the chocolates. When the 10 days are up, however, Renault still refuses to sell the chocolates. Other kids in the school hear about this and decide that they don't need to sell the chocolates either. This might not seem like a big deal...but since Renault went against the Vigils - the other kids start re-evaluating how they think of the Vigils and dont' hold them in high regard anymore. The Vigils know they must do something to keep their power.

I dont' know if that really does the book justice. This was a YA book but I still really enjoyed it. I think it does show how hard highschool can be - how some people have the power/popularity and how they treat the kids who don't. I was very confused in the beginning - it didn't really explain who each person was - but soon it all started to make sense. I was really pulling for Renault too - I loved that he stood up to the powerfull people.

I see that you are already taking part in a couple of book challenges. If you are up for one more, you may already be reading books that would fit two categories. The Pelham Public Library in Fonthill, Ontario is issuing the "Banned Book Challenge," in recognition of Freedom to Read Week in Canada. Details are here: http://www.pelhamlibrary.blogspot.com/2007/02/take-banned-book-challenge.html

The Chocolate War would be on the lists.

Thanks for sharing your review. I've been aware of this book and it sounded intriguing. Now I'm going to get it and read it. Hopefully my high school daughter will pick it up, too. We like to read and discuss the same books.

I read this in high school but to this day hold in on the top of my mental 'list' This book is grand and a classic we should all read if only to have a humble feeling by the end.
