Bridge to Terabithia by Katherine Paterson

This is a children's book - I want to say young adult but it was actually found in the kids section - so I suppose I'll say it is a children's book. haha! This was for the banned book challenge.

Jesse is ten and one of five children, although he is the middle child and the only boy. His two older sisters somehow always get out of doing the chores around the house so he is stuck doing them all. He also doesn't really have many friends at school either. One day he notices a new family moving into the Perkin's house - his closest neighbor. There is a child his age, but it's a girl so he makes no effort to become friends with her. Then school starts and the girl tries to be his friend and slowley they start hanging out and become best friends. They often escape into the woods where they built a castle, they are king and queen of Terabithia. Then one day there is a tragedy and Jesse is never the same again. He must learn to copy with what happened and in the long run is a stronger person because of it.

I read this for a banned book challenge I am participating in. I think I know why it was banned although I'm not saying on here because I don't want to give anything away. I don't agree with it though - don't believe it should be banned. I think this is a great story for kids. It teaches them that it's ok to be different and to be friends with anybody you wish. I think it also would help them deal if this same tragedy struck them.
I can't remember if I read this as a kid although i want to say I do. I do know I'll be keeping my copy and will have it around for my kids (someday!) to read.
